Guide for testers

Thank you for testing Determined. This takes about 15 minutes to set up.

Determined is now in the App Store and Google Play, for families enrolled in the Determined research study at the University of Rochester. This guide is for testers who started before that.

Moving to the store apps

1. Get the apps

  1. Install TestFlight from the App Store.
  2. Open the invitation email and accept it.
  3. Install both apps: Determined+ on the caregiver's iPhone and Determined on the teen's iPhone. For a quick try, one iPhone can run both.

TestFlight builds expire after 90 days. A new one will be offered before then.

The teen app on Android

Determined (the teen app) also runs on Android, through Google Play's internal testing. Determined+ stays on the iPhone.

  1. Email us the Google account the teen uses on the phone. We add it to the testers list. If the account is managed with Family Link, a parent may need to approve.
  2. On the teen's phone, open the link we send and accept the invitation. Play calls this "internal testing" and may mark the app "Unreviewed": that's expected.
  3. Install Determined from the Play Store link on that page, then connect it as in step 3.

2. Set up

  1. Sign up in Determined+. A code arrives by email to confirm the address.
  2. Create your household, add a teen, and build a routine or two with a few steps.

3. Connect the teen's phone

  1. In Determined+, open the teen and tap Connect a device. A QR code and an 8-character code appear; the code lasts 10 minutes.
  2. On the teen's phone, open Determined and tap Scan to connect, or Type the code instead.

If Determined isn't on the teen's phone yet, scan the QR code with the phone's camera. It opens a page with the App Store or Google Play link. Install Determined, open it, then scan the code again. Codes expire after 10 minutes. If it has expired, tap Get a new code in Determined+.

A phone still on an older build (before 1.0.0) can't read the new QR code with Determined's scanner. Update Determined first, or type the short code.

If the teen's phone uses Bark

Bark can block the pages the apps need. In Bark, allow www.determinedteens.com, the App Store, Google Play and *.amazonaws.com.

4. What to try

5. Known limitations

6. Your data

Please use nicknames and don't enter health details: see the privacy policy.

Erasing removes the records from the service at once. The teen's phone keeps only check-offs it hadn't sent yet, until it is connected again or the app is deleted.

7. Feedback

Take a screenshot in either app and use TestFlight's Send Beta Feedback (on Android, attach it to an email), or email support@determinedteens.com.
